Award Winning Garments Created with Powertex
Many designers in this year's Wearable Art Mandurah event experimented with the use of Powertex to create sculptural form in their garments. Marie Gallin and Helen Coleman, who both attended the popular Powertex workshop - Creating Sculptural Form in Wearable Art, with Ashley Hay - were major category winners. Marie Gallin and Jude Tupman were awarded Artist of the Year with their creation, "Boab".... the headdress demonstrated sophisticated, experimental use of Powertex, whilst the integration of the beautiful textile details with the medium was stunning. Mandurah Artist, Helen Coleman won the Architectural Category with "Icarus Rising"... the innovative use of Powertex to create the bone structures of the wings and the ingenious design of the form to make it robust as it moved with the body was glorious... set against the gorgeous encaustic wax feathers the effect was incredible! Congratulations to all three designers... your awards were well deserved!
From the attendees of the 2016 "Creating Sculptural Form" with Ashley Hay, three were 2017 Wearable Art Mandurah winners!
Here’s what they had to say:
Carol Hazel (Facilitator of Silver Chain) Winner Powertex Award: "Powertex is versatile and easy to use. Ashley covered many techniques in her workshop, Creating Sculptural Form, which proved valuable in the making of Sands of Time".
Helen Coleman, Winner Architectural: "Last year I knew what I wanted to make for Wearable Art, but not how to do it. By the time I had finished Ash's Powertex workshop I had the techniques I needed to create Icarus Rising".
Marie Gallin, Winner (with Jude Tupman) Wearable Art Mandurah Artist of the Year: "Thank you, Ash, for so generously sharing your creativity and experience with us all".
